Handling Stage Fright is probably the biggest and most common singing difficulties we help people overcome on a regular basis at voicercise.com .
What is stage fright?
You could Define Stage Fright as:
- a lack of confidence,
- fear of singing in front of people,
- various body parts shaking uncontrollably,
- one’s throat closing up,
- having a hard time breathing,
- no sound coming out,
- loosing control of words or melodies or even harmonies,
- fear of looking or sounding stupid
- Singing only what’s “safe” not what you really capable of
- uncomfortable facing or looking at your audience
- needing to close your eyes
- or just plain embarrassment
Those are all pretty uncomfortable sensations. Would you agree?
However, there are many many instances these same people have done something that made them very uncomfortable. Why? Because they have decided that the outcome, is more important to them, then the uncomfortable feeling they feel.
What uncomfortable feelings to you endure every day, that are worth it to you?
What uncomfortable feelings to you endure every day, that are worth it to you?
- Driving for the first time?
- Running through the rain to get somewhere?
- Eating a meal from a loved one that doesn't taste very good?
This idea that in order for you to perform and do a good job you have to do it without any bad feeling is a bunch or baloney.
For instance, you may be too scared to sing on stage right now. But say the scenario changed and you were now being offered 5 millions dollars to sing a song on stage. Would 5 million dollars be worth feeling uncomfortable for the length of a 3 minute song?
You see, courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the decision that something is more important then the fear we feel.
Is it true that famous people don't have stage fright? No! Not at all! They decided performing to an audience was more important that their uncomfortable feeling, and some of these singers would have been missing out on millions of dollars had they listed to their stagefright.
Sometimes, what's waiting at the other end of you fear is something absolutely wonderful, that you are choosing to miss out on! A thunderous applause, and sometimes even a millions dollar career.
